Battery Storage Kühmoos

Welcome to the information page for the planned battery storage in Rickenbach Municipality.
Clean energy. Regional stability. Secured supply.
The Project

Why in Rickenbach?

The Waldshut region is a great place to live, shaped by nature, community and a high quality of life. To keep it that way, a secure, future-proof energy supply is needed.

The site was carefully selected – based on, among other things:

  • the proximity to suitable grid infrastructure
  • the suitable availability of land
  • the strategic location as a grid node between Amprion, TransnetBW and the grid connection to Switzerland

The Kühmoos substation is an important site for the stability of the cross-regional power grid – and thus also for local supply security here on site.

What is planned?

We are planning to build a battery storage facility in Rickenbach to permanently secure the region's energy supply.

As the expansion of renewable energies continues to grow, the need for reliable storage solutions is becoming ever greater. Because on some days the sun shines intensely, on others there is particularly strong wind. At times it even happens that wind turbines have to be switched off because too much electricity is being produced and it cannot be fully fed into the grid. A surplus arises.

Battery storage systems absorb this excess electricity and feed it back into the power grid when needed.

This keeps your power grid reliable at all times, your region permanently and securely supplied – and supports the geopolitical independence of the German power grid.

Environment & Safety

Safety & Environmental Protection

When operating the battery storage facility, safety, environmental compatibility and compliance with all legal requirements are the top priority.

Fire protection

  • Multi-stage fire protection system with aerosol extinguishing system
  • Automatic 24/7 monitoring
  • Temperature and smoke monitoring
  • Enclosed, secured facility
  • Close collaboration with local emergency services

Noise emissions

  • The noise level is comparable to that of a quiet commercial operation
  • All legal limit values are complied with
  • A comprehensive noise assessment will be prepared as part of the approval process

Environmental aspects

  • No permanent emissions, air or odour pollution
  • Dismantlable after the end of the project
  • No permanent lighting
  • Enclosure with hedgerow for animal protection and landscape integration
CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

Process & Schedule

During the construction phase of a battery storage facility, certain temporary impacts on residents cannot be completely avoided – at the same time, operations afterwards are barely noticeable.

During the construction phase there may be:

  • Temporary construction traffic
  • Short-term noise

After completion:

  • No permanent increase in traffic
  • No regular public traffic
  • Visual integration through planting and hedgerow

The goal is to keep disruptions as minimal as possible.

Region

Impact on the Region

A battery storage facility brings a wide range of benefits to the region – from economic stimulus to a stronger energy infrastructure, greater security of supply and a sustainable future.

Economic stimulus

  • Awarding construction contracts to regional companies (where possible)
  • Trade tax revenues at the project site
  • Strengthening of the regional energy infrastructure

Contribution to the energy transition

  • Integration of renewable energies
  • Grid stability
  • Security of supply

Above all, it helps to secure the region's energy supply in the long term – for households, businesses and future generations.

Battery Storage

Why are battery storage systems needed?

1
Balancing generation and consumption
Electricity from sun and wind is not always generated when it is needed. Battery storage systems shift energy over time, thereby bridging the gap between generation and demand.
2
Stabilising the grid in seconds
Even the smallest deviations can destabilise the power grid. Battery storage systems react in milliseconds and reliably keep frequency and voltage in balance.
3
Avoiding curtailment of installations
During periods of high feed-in, renewable energy is often curtailed unused. Battery storage systems prevent these losses by absorbing excess electricity and making it available later.
4
Making grid expansion more efficient
Power grids are increasingly reaching their limits at a regional level. Battery storage systems relieve the infrastructure and reduce the need for costly grid expansion.
5
Securing supply even during dark doldrums
When neither the sun shines nor the wind blows, flexible reserves are needed. Battery storage systems provide energy at short notice, thereby increasing security of supply.
6
Making the energy system more flexible and future-proof
A modern electricity system is becoming more decentralised and dynamic. Battery storage systems create the necessary flexibility to integrate renewable energies reliably and efficiently.
Our Commitment

Energy projects affect people – which is why we want to develop this project openly, transparently and in dialogue.

About Us

Return J&P GmbH

Return J&P GmbH develops and operates battery storage systems – making a concrete contribution to the energy transition. As part of the Return Group, we are one of the leading independent providers of energy storage solutions in Europe.

Our goal is clear: to make renewable energies more usable while at the same time strengthening security of supply – especially for local communities.

We bring more than 40 years of experience in project development and implementation. This experience helps us not only with technical matters, but above all in dealing responsibly with regions and their people.

It is important to us to develop a project together with the local community that is implemented safely, transparently and sustainably. Because energy projects are a matter of trust. That is why we rely on open dialogue, clear information and dedicated contact persons who are available at any time for questions.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is a fire hazard to be expected from the facility?
The facility meets the highest safety standards and features a multi-stage fire protection system.
Are there any health risks?
No. The facility produces no harmful emissions and complies with all legal requirements.
Will the landscape be significantly altered?
The facility has a limited building height and will be designed to be as landscape-compatible as possible – in close coordination with the authorities.
How long will the storage facility remain in operation?
The planned operational lifespan is approximately 20 years.
What happens after the end of operations?
The facility will be completely dismantled.
